In the midst of April 2023, I found myself with an unexpected break after being retrenched due to the closure of the company I worked for. This provided me with a golden opportunity to explore new avenues, and one particular interest caught my eye - programming. You see, during my previous job, I stumbled upon the fascinating world of coding while attempting to create a Twitter bot. 🤫
As I delved deeper into this uncharted territory, I decided to enroll in the "100 Days of Code" online course by Dr. Angela Yu. The course covered an array of exciting subjects such as Python, HTML, and CSS. To my pleasant surprise, I discovered a genuine passion for writing code, and I often found myself lost in time whenever I embarked on a new project.
I am forever grateful that the CEO of my previous workplace never bothered to glance at my certificates, allowing me the freedom to pursue new horizons. Although my background had no connection to marketing, I seized the opportunity to unleash my full potential by learning on the job. *hint hint* 😉
Initially, my role was that of a Social Media Manager, but my insatiable thirst for knowledge led me to explore beyond my initial responsibilities. I began dabbling in various other aspects, taking on roles like a marketing executive and a digital marketing executive. Before I knew it, I had embarked on a journey down the digital marketing path and proudly embraced the change in my title!
I had been trapped in the realm of accounting for far too long! Seven long years were spent studying a subject I had little interest in, but alas, the rigidity of the education system prevented me from switching courses. Why seven years, you ask? Well, it all began with a "nitec" certification (2 years), followed by a "higher nitec" certification (2 years), and ultimately culminated in a diploma certification (3 years). Fortunately, the advent of easily accessible online courses breathed new life into my ambitions.
During my tenure at an accounting firm as an accounting executive, I did not limit myself to a single role. In fact, I donned two hats, serving both as a secretary and an accounting executive. And no, I'm not referring to the traditional secretary role; rather, I assisted the companies within the accounting firm's portfolio as their dedicated secretary.
In an exciting venture, I took part in the prestigious 42 Piscine held in Singapore. This intense program pushed me to my limits for 26 challenging days of relentless coding. Immersed in the world of C programming and shell scripting, I honed my skills and became adept at maneuvering through the terminal environment.
My passion for technology ignited when I embarked on the "100 Days of Code" online course by Dr. Angela Yu. Through sheer determination and self-learning, I mastered the intricacies of Python, HTML, and CSS during this transformative journey. The course served as the catalyst for my unyielding desire to thrive in the tech industry.
Through self-guided learning on the job at XanPool, I embraced unfamiliar territories with remarkable success. This opportunity opened doors to an array of skills encompassing copywriting, photo-editing, video editing, social media management, and even delving into the realm of Google Analytics - a truly enriching experience.
Serving as both an accountant and secretary at PC Management Pte Ltd, I delved into the world of account reports, audited materials, and crafting comprehensive financial statements for the company. Navigating the intricacies of ACRA submission and diligently handling all paperwork broadened my skillset, bringing newfound knowledge and expertise.
As a proud Singaporean man, I embraced the call of duty to serve two years of national service with the SCDF. Bestowed with the honorable role of a firefighter, I had the privilege of fighting fires and saving lives. It was an experience that left an indelible mark on my heart, knowing that I played a vital role in protecting the community.
